A devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad, India, has shocked the world, claiming the lives of 242 people on board. On June 12, 2025, Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad's airport, headed to London's Gatwick Airport. The incident occurred when the aircraft was ascending, and it issued a 'Mayday' distress call before disappearing from radar contact.
Visuals from the crash site showed a massive fire with debris scattered across a residential area near the airport. Emergency services were quickly mobilized, but sadly, no survivors were reported. The registration number of the aircraft involved was VT-ANB, according to Flightradar24.
Indian Minister of Civil Aviation, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, expressed deep sadness and assured that all necessary measures are being taken to assist those affected. Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences, stating that the nation is working closely with authorities to provide relief.
International leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, have also responded to the tragedy, highlighting the devastating impact on families and communities involved.
This incident marks one of the most significant aviation disasters in recent Indian history, following the 2020 crash of an Air India Express flight at Kozhikode International Airport.
