WPL Shock: Ayushi Soni Makes History as First Batter 'Retired Out' on Debut
In a dramatic turn during the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026, Gujarat Giants' debutant Ayushi Soni became the first batter in tournament history to be retired out, etching an unwanted record in the match against Mumbai Indians on January 13, 2026, at Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.
The 25-year-old right-handed batter from Delhi walked in at No. 6 after Kanika Ahuja's dismissal by Hayley Matthews. Facing pressure in the death overs, Soni scored a modest 11 runs off 14 balls but struggled to accelerate. Ahead of the 17th over, Gujarat Giants' management made a bold tactical decision to retire her out, aiming to inject urgency into the innings.
The move proved inspired. Replacement Bharti Fulmali, representing Vidarbha domestically, survived two early LBW calls and exploded for an unbeaten 36 off 15 balls, including three boundaries and three sixes. Her cameo, alongside Georgia Wareham, propelled Gujarat Giants to a formidable 192/5 in 20 overs.
Soni earned her spot in the XI due to Anushka Sharma's injury from the previous game against Delhi Capitals. Acquired by Gujarat Giants for Rs 30 lakh at the WPL 2026 auction on November 27, 2025, Soni impressed in zonal T20 tournaments and has represented North Delhi Strikers in the Delhi Premier League.
Her international pedigree includes a solitary T20I appearance for India in 2021 against South Africa in Lucknow, though she did not bat or bowl in that comfortable victory. Despite the debut setback, Soni's all-round skills position her as a promising talent for the franchise.
This unprecedented event highlights the high-stakes strategy in T20 cricket, where teams prioritize momentum over individual milestones.
