Tragic Fire at Birch by Romeo Lane Nightclub in Goa Claims 25 Lives

In the early hours of December 7, 2025, a devastating fire broke out at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub located in Arpora village, North Goa. The blaze resulted in the deaths of 25 individuals, including 14 staff members and 4 tourists, with additional reports confirming several injuries among survivors.

The fire reportedly started shortly after midnight near the kitchen area on the ground floor of the club, believed to have been triggered by exploding LPG cylinders. The fire quickly engulfed the building, where approximately 100 people were present on the dance floor at the time, severely hampering evacuation efforts especially due to the club's narrow entrance and exit pathways.

Birch by Romeo Lane, which opened in 2024, had received demolition notices from local authorities such as the gram panchayat and the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority. However, these were stayed following an appeal to the Directorate of Panchayats of Goa. This regulatory background adds complexity to the ongoing investigations.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the site and promised stringent action against the club management and officials responsible for permitting the nightclub to operate despite safety norm violations. A magisterial probe has been ordered to thoroughly investigate the circumstances leading to the tragedy.

National leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. PM Modi extended his condolences to the families of those lost and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. The fire has shocked the region, highlighting urgent concerns about safety standards in entertainment venues.

Emergency services, including police and fire authorities, are actively investigating the fire’s cause and have begun legal proceedings. Support for victims' families has been promised, while the community mourns the significant loss, particularly given the number of young staff members and tourists affected in what had been a popular party venue.
