Legendary Tamil Producer AVM Saravanan Passes Away at 86: A Pillar of Kollywood

AVM Saravanan, the iconic Tamil film producer and owner of the renowned AVM Studios in Chennai, passed away early on December 4, 2025, just a day after celebrating his 86th birthday. He died due to age-related health issues, marking the end of an era in Tamil cinema.

Born in 1939, Saravanan was the son of the legendary filmmaker AV Meiyappan Chettiar, founder of AVM Productions. Alongside his brother M Balasubramanian, he took charge of the family legacy after their father's demise in 1979, successfully leading the studio and production house that has been a stalwart of Tamil cinema for over seven decades.

Throughout his extensive career, AVM Saravanan produced numerous films that not only entertained but also conveyed strong social consciousness and upheld family values. His leadership helped shape the trajectory of Kollywood, earning him widespread respect as a pillar of the industry.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin, expressed deep sorrow upon Saravanan's demise, describing it as an irreplaceable loss to Tamil cinema. Stalin highlighted the significant bond between AVM Studios and Tamil cultural movements, recalling classic films produced under Saravanan's banner which contributed richly to the industry’s legacy. He also shared personal memories of Saravanan during a visit to the AVM Heritage Museum in 2023, praising his humility and kindness.

Industry veterans, including actors Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, and prominent film personalities, mourned the loss of Saravanan and paid heartfelt tributes. The public was invited to pay homage at AVM Studios, where the funeral was scheduled for 4 pm on the day of his passing.

AVM Saravanan’s legacy endures through AVM Productions, one of the oldest and most respected film production companies in South India. His contribution to Tamil cinema remains monumental, marking him as a legendary figure whose impact will be felt for generations to come.
