CP Radhakrishnan Named NDA's Candidate for Vice President of India, Elevating Tamil Nadu's National Presence

CP Radhakrishnan, Maharashtra Governor and veteran BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, has been announced as the NDA's candidate for India's Vice Presidential election on September 9, 2025, marking a key BJP-

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has officially selected Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as its candidate for the Vice Presidential election scheduled on September 9, 2025, a move announced by BJP National President JP Nadda on August 17, 2025.

CP Radhakrishnan, a seasoned BJP leader with over 40 years of political experience, currently serves as the 24th Governor of Maharashtra, a post he assumed on July 31, 2024. He has prior gubernatorial experience including as Governor of Jharkhand (February 2023 - July 2024), as well as additional charges as Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry in 2024.

Radhakrishnan has been a significant presence in Tamil Nadu politics, having twice been elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore and previously serving as the BJP State President for Tamil Nadu. His nomination marks a strategic effort by BJP to strengthen its foothold in southern India, particularly Tamil Nadu, where the party aims to expand its influence.

The decision was reached unanimously in a BJP Parliamentary Board meeting in New Delhi. Leadership including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President JP Nadda were authorized to finalize the candidate selection. Nadda emphasized that they hope to achieve a consensus in the Vice Presidential election and mentioned ongoing dialogues with opposition parties to ensure smooth conduct of the poll.

The post became vacant following the resignation of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, 2025, citing health reasons. The NDA, with a commanding majority in the electoral college comprising both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members, is expected to secure an easy victory if the election is contested.

However, the opposition INDIA bloc has indicated plans to field a candidate, with internal discussions scheduled for August 18, 2025. Tamil Nadu's DMK, part of the INDIA alliance, acknowledged RadhakrishnanтАЩs nomination positively but will align with the alliance decisions on support.

Nomination filing for the election closes on August 21, with withdrawal options available until August 25. The election process includes polling and counting on the same day, September 9, 2025.

CP RadhakrishnanтАЩs selection is seen not just as a recognition of his political tenure and loyalty but as a calculated step to boost BJPтАЩs regional ambitions while maintaining strong electoral prospects at the national level.
