Ajit Pawar Addresses Controversy Over Viral Video Involving IPS Officer
Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar, has come forward to clarify his involvement in a recent viral video showing him allegedly rebuking IPS officer Anjana Krishna during a police crackdown on illegal soil excavation in Solapur district.
In the widely circulated footage, Pawar can be heard instructing the officer to halt action against illegal "murrum" excavation activities. This video sparked controversy and criticism across political and social platforms.
Responding to the backlash, Ajit Pawar stated that his intention was not to interfere with law enforcement but to ensure the situation remained calm and did not escalate. He offered a public statement emphasizing his respect for the police force, particularly highlighting his appreciation for women officers who serve with dedication and courage.
"I have the highest respect for our police force and its officers, including the women officers who serve with distinction and courage. I value the rule of law above all," Pawar said. He reaffirmed his commitment to transparent governance and strict enforcement against illegal activities, including sand mining.
Following the incident, the Maharashtra Police have registered a case against several individuals accused of obstructing IPS officer Anjana Krishna and other officials during the illegal excavation crackdown. The Nationalist Congress Party clarified that Pawar's intent was not to completely stop the police action but to maintain peace on the ground.
Pawar's nephew and MLA Rohit Pawar, from a rival faction of the NCP, supported him by describing his uncle's communication style as straightforward but cautioned that some allies might be exaggerating the controversy. NCP MP Sunil Tatkare suggested Pawar's call may have been aimed at placating party workers rather than halting enforcement entirely.
This episode highlights the delicate balance political leaders face when engaged in law enforcement issues on the ground, especially in sensitive matters like illegal mining that affect governance and public order.
