Afghanistan launched their Asia Cup 2025 campaign emphatically by defeating Hong Kong by a massive 94 runs in their Group B opener held in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday. The victory was powered by stellar innings from Sediqullah Atal and Azmatullah Omarzai along with a disciplined bowling performance that dismantled Hong Kong early on.

Electing to bat first, Afghanistan posted a competitive total of 188 for 6 in their 20 overs. The innings appeared shaky at 110 for 4 with five overs remaining until Azmatullah Omarzai sparked a late surge with a blistering 53 off just 21 balls, registering the fastest T20 international half-century for Afghanistan. Sediqullah Atal anchored the innings with an unbeaten 73 off 52 balls, supported by a useful 33 from experienced all-rounder Mohammad Nabi.

Hong Kong’s chase faltered badly from the outset as Afghanistan’s pacers struck hard. Fazalhaq Farooqi and Azmatullah Omarzai tore through the top order in the powerplay reducing Hong Kong to 23 for 4 inside six overs. Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan, and Noor Ahmad then kept up the pressure, ensuring Hong Kong could only amass 94 for 9 at the end of their innings. Hong Kong skipper Babar Hayat was the lone resistance with 39 runs off 43 balls.

The Afghan bowlers’ clinical effort was reflected in the figures of Naib’s 2 wickets for 8 runs in 3 overs and Farooqi’s 2 for 16. Despite Hong Kong dropping five catches, Afghanistan maintained dominance throughout the game.

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan addressed logistical challenges faced by his team due to travel between Dubai and Abu Dhabi for their group fixtures, labeling the schedule as “not so ideal.” However, he emphasized professional adaptability and focusing on performance once on the field.
