Former J&K Governor Satyapal Malik Passes Away After Prolonged Illness

Veteran politician and former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik died at 79 after a prolonged illness, marking the end of a significant political career.

Satyapal Malik, the veteran Indian politician and the last Governor of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, passed away on August 5, 2025, at the age of 79 after battling a prolonged illness. He died at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi, where he had been receiving intensive treatment for several months.

Malik was admitted to the hospital on May 11, 2025, with a complicated urinary tract infection. His condition worsened due to kidney failure caused by diabetic kidney disease compounded by hypertension, morbid obesity, and obstructive sleep apnea. Despite multiple interventions, including dialysis and critical care management, he succumbed to multi-organ dysfunction at 1:12 PM.

During his political career, Malik served in many important capacities. He was the 10th and final Governor of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 until October 2019, overseeing the administration during the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganisation of the state into Union Territories. Prior to this, he held gubernatorial positions in Bihar, Goa, and Meghalaya.

Besides gubernatorial roles, Malik was a Rajya Sabha member, Lok Sabha MP, and Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Tourism. He also served as the national vice president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was known for his outspoken views on issues surrounding Jammu and Kashmir and governance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his profound grief over Malik's demise, stating, "Saddened by the passing away of Shri Satyapal Malik ji. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this hour of grief. Om Shanti."

Malik's political journey was marked by his service across various Indian states and his candid criticisms that sparked debate and discussion on governance and policy implementation. His death marks the end of an era for many who followed the evolving political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir and beyond.
