Dulquer Salmaan’s ‘Kaantha’ Sets a New Benchmark in Tamil Cinema with Intense Drama and 1950s Madras Backdrop
The much-awaited teaser of the Tamil period drama film 'Kaantha' starring Dulquer Salmaan was released on July 28, coinciding with the actor’s birthday. The teaser promises a gripping narrative set against the vibrant and transformative backdrop of 1950s Madras, transporting audiences into Tamil cinema's golden era.
'Kaantha' is directed by Selvamani Selvaraj and jointly produced by Spirit Media along with Dulquer Salmaan’s production house, Wayfarer Films. The film is slated for release on September 12, 2025.
Set in the 1950s, the story revolves around the behind-the-scenes turmoil of a fictional film production titled 'Saantha', described as Tamil cinema’s first horror film. Dulquer Salmaan portrays Chandran, the film’s lead actor, while veteran actor Samuthirakani plays Ayya, the film’s director and writer.
The teaser reveals a complex relationship between Chandran and Ayya, former collaborators who now face creative and personal clashes. Ayya, a mentor figure, advocates for artistic integrity and giving more prominence to the female lead. Meanwhile, Chandran asserts his influence by altering key aspects of the project, including renaming the film from 'Saantha' to 'Kaantha', symbolizing underlying tensions and ego conflicts.
The cast is further strengthened by Rana Daggubati, who returns to Tamil cinema here after a notable gap, and Bhagyashri Borse, acclaimed for her performances and upcoming projects in the industry.
Technically, the film boasts impressive credentials with Dani Sanchez-Lopez as the cinematographer, Jhanu Chanthar composing the music, art direction by Tha. Ramalingam, and editing by Llewellyn Anthony Gonsalves. The visual grandeur and period detailing showcased in the teaser highlight meticulous craftsmanship aimed at authentically recreating the era.
The film promises to explore themes of tradition versus modernity, artistic ambition, and fractured relationships within the cinematic world of the 1950s. Fans are eager to see Dulquer Salmaan shedding his typical "heartthrob" image to take on a layered character whose moral compass defies simple categorization.
With its evocative teaser, main star power, and technically rich production, 'Kaantha' is positioned to be a landmark Tamil film this season, sparking excitement among cinephiles and general audiences alike.
